Are Doctors Selling Derivatives?

The global financial crisis of 2008 has brought attention to structural flaws in banking systems. Structural flaws, in this context, refer to overarching rules or architecture that promote unwanted behaviors or undesired consequences. In the case of the financial crisis, this translated into the behavior of chasing short-term profits, and the consequence of the overvaluation of credit products, to an extent that threatened the entire system. In medicine, there are similar structural flaws that promote unwanted behaviors and lead to unwanted consequences. Interestingly, there are analogs between the misplaced structural elements of the financial system and those of health care. Here, we hope to show that the lesions of the financial crisis are, have similar counterparts in health care.
