Ground Based Air Defense Systems New Challenges and Prospective

While the airplane itself was taking its first ‘baby’ steps into mankind’s history,some visionary officers, like Gioulio Douhet or William ‘Billy’ Mitchell, wereoutlining the future baselines of air power and how it could be used to change theoutcome of future conflicts. After those early days and almost in every conflict,the proper use of air power became crucial for the successful conduct of militaryoperations. One has only to examine the psychological impact of all of the airraids that took place in the conflicts after 1914. In all of the above militaryoperations, one key aspect remains the same throughout the years. The GBADsystems are trying to target only the aircraft. Nothing or little has been done totarget the weapons themselves. During the WWI and II the GBAD forces (mainlyimprovised guns in the early days and later on AAA artillery with some primitivefire and control procedures) spent thousands of rounds with virtually no effect.
