摘要

Objective: To determine quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) changes in patients diagnosed with FibromyalgiaSyndrome (FMS), to explore the role of transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) and acupuncture applications onpain control, and to expose the changes in EEG resulting from TENS and acupuncture applications. Methods: The study sample consisted of 42 patients in the age group of 21e65 years, who were diagnosed with FMS according to the American College of Rheumatology classification among the patients admitted to Baskent University Facultyof Medicine, Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, as well as 21 healthy volunteers. The patients wererandomly assigned to two groups of 21 subjects to undergo either TENS or acupuncture application. In both acupuncture andTENS groups, baseline EEG recording was performed for 10 minutes and then TENS or acupuncture was performed for 20minutes; followed by another 10 minute EEG recording. Results: In the present study, baseline qEEG findings of FMS patients in the TENS and acupuncture groups were similar. In theTENS group, after the treatment, an increase was observed in the alpha power of the left anterior and right posteriorregions and in the theta power of the right posterior region. No change was observed in the delta or beta power. In theacupuncture group, after the treatment, an increase was determined in the alpha power of the right and left posteriorregions, in the theta power of the right posterior region, and in the beta power of the right and left posterior regions. Conclusions: The power of low- and moderate-frequency waves on resting EEG was decreased in the patients with FMS.Decrease in pain score and increase in the power of medium-frequency waves on EEG due to the increase in the inhibitoractivity in the central nervous system was determined with TENS and acupuncture applications. Therefore, considering painscores and EEG findings, we think that both TENS and acupuncture.
