TheJ.WillardMarriottLibraryattheUniversityofUtahhasdigitized30,000pagesfromthreeweeklyUtahnewspapersfromtheperiodof1889-1922andmadethecollectionsfreelyavailableontheInternet.Thisarticledescribesanewmethodfordigitizinghistoricnewspapers,developedinapartnershipbetweentheUniversityandtwocommercialorganizations.UtilizingOCRandnewspaperprocessingtechnologyfromiArchives,Inc.andtheCONTENTdmdigitalcollectionssoftwaresuite,thenewmethodrecentlyprototypedbytheUniversityofUtahpresentsaviableandaffordabledigitizationmethodtoculturalheritageinstitutionsnationwide.Inparticular,theprocesscanbeimplementedincrementally,makingitaffordableforbothsmallandlargecollections,andthetechnologysupportsmanydifferentdigitalformats,notjustnewspapers.Thedigitizednewspapersarepubliclyaccessibleandmaybesearchedfulltextorbrowsedbyissue.Withtherecentawardofanewgrant,another100,000pagesfromanexpandedselectionofnewspapersareslatedfordigitizationin2003.
