ThisarticledescribesresultsofacollaborationbetweentheResearchLibraryoftheLosAlamosNationalLaboratory(LANL)andtheAmericanPhysicalSociety(APS)aimedatdesigningandimplementingarobustsolutionfortherecurrenttransferofdigitalassetsfromtheAPScollectiontoLANL.Inthissolution,variousrecentstandardsarecombinedtoobtainanassettransferframeworkthatshouldbeattractiveasameanstooptimizecontenttransferinenvironmentsbeyondthespecificAPS/LANLproject.TheproposedsolutionusesanXML-basedcomplexobjectformat(theMPEG-21DigitalItemDeclarationLanguage)fortheapplication-neutralrepresentationofcompounddigitalassetsofallsorts.Itusesapull-orientedHTTP-basedprotocol(theOpenArchivesInitiativeProtocolforMetadataHarvesting)thatallowsincrementallycollectingnewandupdatedassets,representedasXMLdocuments,fromaproducingarchive.ItbuildsonanXML-specifictechnique(W3CXMLSignatures)toprovideguaranteesregardingauthenticityandaccuracyofthetransferredassets.
