TheLOCKSSdigitalpreservationsystemcollectscontentbycrawlingthewebandpreservesitintheformatsuppliedbythepublisher.Eventually,browserswillnolongerunderstandthatformat.Aprocesscalledformatmigrationconvertsittoanewerformatthatthebrowsersdounderstand.TheLOCKSSprogramhasdesignedandtestedaninitialimplementationofformatmigrationforWebcontentthatistransparenttoreaders,buildingonthecontentnegotiationcapabilitiesofHTTP.
