Inthispaper,wediscussauserstudydoneattheformativestageofdevelopmentofaMathToolsdevelopers'community.TheMathToolsdigitallibrary,whichaimstocollectsoftwaretoolstosupportK-12anduniversitymathematicsinstruction,hastwosynergisticpurposes.Oneistosupportfederatedsearchandtheotheristocreateacommunityofpracticeinwhichdevelopersanduserscanworktogether.Whilemuchresearchhasexploredthetechnicalproblemoffederatedsearch,therehasbeenlittleinvestigationintohowtogrowacreative,workingcommunityaroundadigitallibrary.Tothisend,wesurveyedandinterviewedmembersoftheMathToolscommunityinordertoelicitconcernsandpriorities.Thesedataledtorichdescriptionsoftheteachers,developers,andresearcherswhocomprisethiscommunity.InsightsfromthesedescriptionswerethenusedtoinformthecreationofasetofmetaphorsanddesignprinciplesthattheMathToolsteamcoulduseintheircontinuingdesignwork.
