Reforming Medicare-Financed Graduate Medical Education

In 1965 Congress voted to subsidize American medical education throughthe Medicare program because it believed that educating medicalprofessionals was in the best interest of the public.1 Today, Medicare is thesingle largest payer of graduate medical education (GME), the training thatphysicians receive between medical school and independent practice, in theUnited States.2 In 2009 alone, Medicare GME payments covered the costsof 90,000 residents in more than 1,100 accredited teaching hospitals acrossthe United States.
