The attitude of Nigerian young adults and adolescents to grandparents: implications for care of the elderly in Nigeria

The main objective of this study was to assess the attitude of adolescents and young adults towards their grandparents. The participants were 224 (124 females & 100males) freshmen of a Federal University in Lagos, Nigeria with age range between 16 and 37 years and mean age of 19.36 years. Attitude to grandfather and to grandmother scales were designed and administered to assess their thoughts, feelings and dispositions towards their grandparents. The result shows that adolescents and young adults have positive attitudes in terms of their thoughts, feelings and dispositions towards their grandparents. Gender and age differences were also found among respondents' attitudes towards grandmothers. Female respondents were found to have more positive attitude to the grandmothers than male respondents. Also, adolescents were found to have a more positive attitude towards the grandmothers than the young adults. In addition, attitude to the grandmothers was found to be more positive than attitude towards grandfathers
