Changes and correlations in cytokine and eicosanoid production byblood monocytes, non-purified and purified peritoneal cells during acarrageenin-induced peritonitis were investigated for a period often days. The cells were isolated and stimulatedinvitro. Cytokine and eicosanoid production of the non-purifiedfraction increased steadily during peritonitis. During the wholeepisode of peritonitis the production capacity of granulocytes wasvery low and hardly any effect on the production capacity ofmacrophages (M?) was observed. Cytokine and eicosanoid production of thenon-purified fraction was mainly due to the presence ofM?. The production capacity of the peripheral blood monocytes was notsimilar to that of the peritonealM?.
