A peak at what happens ‘between’ primary and secondary neurulation Recent reports have shown congenital anomalies in which there seemed to be a functional disconnection between the primary and secondary neural tube. A thin band-like structure physically con- nected the two neural tubes. Based on the hypothesis that such anomalies may occur by an error during the development of the ‘junction’ between the primary and secondary neural tube, hence the name ‘junctional neural tube defect’. However, due to the paucity of data on the process of junctional neurulation, proof of the hypothetical pathoembryogenesis is unavailable.
