Designing for Engagement: Using the ADDIE Model to Integrate High-Impact Practices into an Online Information Literacy Course

Inthisarticle,theauthorssharehowateamoflibrariansusedtheADDIEinstructionaldesignmodeltoincorporatebestpracticesinteachingandlearningintoanonline,four-creditinformationliteracycourse.Inthisredesignprocess,theAssociationofAmericanCollegesandUniversities’high-impactpracticesande-learningbestpracticeswereintegratedasscaffoldsforcoursecontent.Theauthors#039;experiencewiththissystematicprocessandtheconceptsofinstructionaldesignsuggestthattheADDIEmodelcanbeusedtoachieveseveraldifferentendsininformationliteracyinstruction.First,itcanprovideastructurearoundwhichlibrarianscandevelopavarietyofinstructionalinteractions.Second,itcanhelplibrariansconsiderstudentengagement,learning,andassessmentmoreintentionally.Andthird,itcanhelptomarryinformationliteracy-specificstandardsandotherlearningguidelines,suchashigh-impactpracticesande-learningbestpractices.Fromtheauthors#039;experience,otheracademiclibrariansmayfindapplicationsforinstructionaldesignconstructsintotheirownteachingpractices,bothinonlineandface-to-facelearningenvironments.
