Studentswhowriteessaysonresearchtopicsinwhichnooutsidesourcesarecitedandaccuracyistreatedasnegotiablegenerallyshouldnotexpecttoreceivegoodgrades,especiallyinaninformationliteracycourse.However,askingstudentstodojustthiswasthefirststepinthe“un-researchproject,”atwistonthefamiliarannotatedbibliographyassignmentthatwasintendedtoguidestudentsawayfrom“satisficing”withtheirchoiceofsourcesandtowardabetterunderstandingofscholarshipasaconversation.Theprojectwasimplementedaspartofacredit-bearingcourseinspring2014withpromisingresults,includingamorethoughtfulchoiceofsourcesonstudents’part.Withsomefine-tuning,theun-researchprojectcanofferaneffectivealternativetothetraditionalannotatedbibliographyassignmentandcanbeadaptedforavarietyofinstructionalsituations.
