President's Message July/August 2020

Welcome to the 'Innovation in Equipment Technology' edition of the Industrial Eye. When pondering my message for industry in line with this edition's focus, I looked to social media for inspiration. What became readily apparent is that the Australian NDT and CM industry is actually very innovative. Our sector is often asked by asset owners to solve complex problems, to devise solutions supported by validation to meet our customers needs. Australian companies are regularly developing innovative solutions that are outside our "usual" Australian Standards framework, or known "tram tracks" to work within. Whilst on my social media search I saw an NDT company's posts regarding bespoke robotic thickness testing scanners for non-intrusive inspections allowing assets to stay online for testing. The interesting point for me was not the post itself, but what I noticed when I zoomed into the photo to see which brand scanner they were using. It had the NDT service provider company's details etched there, not an equipment manufacturer! As such, I can only assume that this company makes their own robotic scanners.
