Within days of taking up his role as president of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Sir John Parker effectively closed the doors of the Academy's Carlton House Terrace headquarters as it commenced an eight-month, £6.5m facelift - a project close to his heart and the subject of an eighteen-month fund raising campaign. Making his inaugural speech earlier this summer - at what was the final event to be held at the Academy until completion of work in the spring of next year - Sir John restated his intention to bring engineering into the heartland of society.
