New books focusing on design from the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia are warmly welcomed-particularly when such books make a serious contribution to design after the turbulent dissolution of the Federation into six nation states in the early 1990s. One such book, Design for a New World, undoubtedly fills a void in the literature; readers who would like to know more about design in this socialist state at the end of the Cold War will greatly value and appreciate the work. Non-Aligned Yugoslavia wedged between politically opponent Eastern and Western blocs, played an important role in world politics of that time, yet its design heritage is almost unknown in the world history of design. I do not wish to speculate on whether this lack of inclusion resulted from power relations, pure ignorance, imperialist inclinations, or something else. However, it does reflect several hegemonic tendencies that were present in design historiography until the early 2000s, when the design history community began to question and re-evaluate issues of the canon, power, position, and the resulting inclusion or exclusion.
