Metal rubber, shape memory alloys without hysteresis for thermostats and complex metal alloy which could solve the hydrogen storage problem in future cars are just three of the developments to come out of previously military-oriented research programmes in the former Soviet Union. All have been developed with funds from the International Science and Technology Centre (ISTC) - an intergovernmental organisation with headquarters in Moscow.
