Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has developed an energised PTFE seal with an enclosed spring with no dead space for extra cleanliness. The Turcon Variseal Ultra-Clean avoids dead space where bacteria might accumulate in food industry applications. Another application is where metal extractables might reside in semiconductor manufacturing that could subsequently enter the system. Numerous tests have been undertaken. Test samples of Turcon MF1, the high purity PTFE plus additives out of which the seals are made, were immersed in ultra pure deionised water at a temperature of 85℃ for a week. The leach out of 20 of the most hostile cations was then measured according to SEMI standard F57-0301. In terms of parts per billion, the materials demonstrated a leach out of 80% less than a standard perfluorelastomer material.
