The 'China Threat', National Missile Defense and American Public Opinion

Why is the "China threat" variable significant? Probably because those who support a NMD are also more likely to see enemies around the world. It gives a justification for building a NMD when other justifications are diminishing (North Korea) or lacking (terrorism, Iran, Iraq). The finding that as people see China more as an adversary, the more likely they are to support a NMD warrants further research. Was China the "bogey man" of the year, or is the US entering a phase where China will be looked upon with suspicion when Americans look beyond their borders. Certainly, the World Trade Center terrorist attack has taken the focus off China for the time being. When the war on terrorism ends or starts receiving less attention, how will Americans see China then? China entered the World Trade Organization (WTO) in November 2001 and has signed on to the Bush coalition against terrorism. Will these events register in the opinions of Americans? Bush's visit to Shanghai in October 2001 most likely softened China's image among Americans; nevertheless, the Bush administration plans to go forward with a NMD continue. Russian leader Vladimir Putin has suggested that Russia may be able to accept American efforts to build a NMD, which may signal that Russia realizes that they are not the target of a NMD.
