A Mathematical Approach to Limit Illegal Border-Crossings - with Application in Protecting Critical Infrastructure

This article presents an approach that can be used to assist in border patrol and security management. On 12 August 2005, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson announced a state of emergency in four counties along the New Mexico-Mexico border in response to the boom in smuggling of drugs and illegal immigrants, kidnapping, murder, and destruction of property and livestock. Three days later, Arizona Governor Janet Napoli-tano issued a similar declaration. Both states immediately released emergency funds to help patrol their borders by hiring additional law enforcement officers and paying them overtime.
