In the taxonomy of conflict, diversionary wars and diversionary activities have received less academic attention than they perhaps deserve, particularly when one considers recent events in North Korea and, indeed, in France where foreign intervention in Mali may be a welcoming diversion from rising unemployment, an absence of growth and other matters, such as Presidential scandals, at home. So into this thin canon of work comes a timely study by Amy Oakes, providing a theoretical structure for the analysis of diversionary wars and then applying this theory to various case studies - most notably the Argentinean invasion of the Falklands (1982) and the US government's expedition to the Utah territory (1857-1858).
