The Wildest Province: SOE in the Land of the Eagle

While browsing through this book, the reviewer was amused to see a photograph which looked like a still shot from the 1961 film The Guns of Navarone. It shows a somewhat dishevelled British Army major called Anthony Quayle (who subsequently enj oyed a successful post-war film acting career) in Albania in February 1944. Major Quayle was one of over 100 members of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) parachuted into that country to help its partisans fight its Italian and German occupiers.
