The interaction of product modularity and supply chain management has emerged as a vital research topic from the importance of modularity in a broad range of industries such as automotive, electronics, information technology, and military equipment, on the one hand, and from the importance of supply chain management for the performance and profitability of companies on the other hand. Moreover, our own interest in the relationship between product modularity and sustainability-a relationship that has not been thoroughly studied from a supply chain-encompassing view-is an additional motivator for this area and adds a highly topical perspective.
