Intranet reality check

Phase one of the New York City kiosk project is complete. The objective was to bring government closer to citizens, giving better service at less cost. To implement the kiosks, an intranet strategy was chosen. Internet Explorer 3.0 was chosen as the client's browser running on Windows95. For the server, Windows NT and IIS were used. Frame Relay lines at the clients and a fractional T1 connection from the server to the Frame Relay cloud allowed for remote monitoring and control of the kiosks and secure transactions over a virtual private network. The real power of the implementation came from using IE 3.0's frames and ActiveX controls.
