NFS servers: Soup up your file I/O

As network file systems (NFS) has spread from its UNIX-only beginnings into PC LANs, NFS acceleration have found a place in commercial applications. Ray Villeneuve of Auspex - the creator of the market - says people are looking for powerful, centralized systems where data can be more effectively managed and yet also be shared with many different users. Auspex focuses on creating high-end systems with carefully sculptured hardware. By contrast, rival Network Appliance has built its NFS Accelerators atop largely off-the-shelf Intel 486-based hardware. Until about a year ago, Auspex and Network Appliance were about the only 2 companies offering dedicated NFS servers. But options are expanding as new vendors introduce products.
