Lords of the jungle: DB middleware helps you find your data

Two database companies have remained aloof from the universal database fray. Microsoft and Sybase did not reject the concept, but instead focused more of their attention on middleware. Microsoft with Microsoft Transaction Server, code-named Viper, and Sybase with Jaguar worked to provide universal data access via a layer of software that would find data wherever they might be in a network, in whatever form they might be in, translate them if need be, and then deliver the result to whatever application or user requested it. This could be the beginning of a genuine rift in the database industry, with the 2 camps - the U-Databasers and the Middlewarers - forming up to a battle that only the fittest will survive.
