Industries such as securities, insurance, and nuclear power, as well as governments, require extraordinary longevity of their computer-generated data. To meet this requirement, many of these users have settled on optical write-once-read-many (WORM) technology. With its projected minimum life span of several decades, WORM media provides the general comfort level needed by these users. Even so, however, most would prefer to know much more specifically how long their WORM media will last. Up until now, WORM technology simply hasn't been around long enough to answer this question based on real-time testing. Instead, expectations have been based on accelerated aging tests and other theoretical projections, which, though often reliable, inevitably leave room for doubt.
