Glass media is rapidly becoming the substrate of choice for disk drives. Comparably priced to traditional aluminum substrates, the use of glass media is driven by advantages other than cost, such as superior hardness, stiffness, and smoothness, all of which contribute to improved drive performance and reliability. Already the media of choice for the laptop computer market, many major manufacturers are also switching to glass media for desktop and server-class machines. However, glass media also poses unique challenges. Specifically, the transparent nature of glass makes it difficult to inspect for defects using optical methods.
