For the past five years, HDD vendors have consistently made impressive performance improvements by increasing both the areal density and the rotational rpm rates of drives. When drive manufacturers implement both techniques simultaneously, there is a corresponding compound increase in the rate at which data is transferred off of the drive. As a result, high-end drives are starting to sport read-channel rates pushing 500 Mbits/sec and the race is on to deliver the first Gbit/sec channels.
