Six months ago, Read-Rite, in collaboration with HMT and Marvell Semiconductor, announced a new areal-density record of 36.0 Gb/in~2, narrowly beating IBM's previous mark of 35.3 Gb/in~2, which had been reported only a month earlier. For both companies, this record represents a blistering 40% increase over previous records in the range of 25 Gb/in~2, established only a few months before. More recendy, Seagate and Read-Rite upped the areal-density ante, with Seagate demonstrating 45 Gb/in~2 and Read-Rite pushing it to 50 Gb/in~2.
