Net managers love to trade tales from the trenches. They'll talk about hardware failures and configuration glitches and how problems can take days to solve, even with the help of the vendor's top technical experts. What they don't talk about is how SNMP has actually made life on the enterprise much easier. Hardware problems are predictable and their solutions relatively easy to come by; rarely do networkers refer network- or even system-level snafus to the vendor's tech staff.
