When wireless LAN vendors start talking about cutting the cable, most net managers respond by pulling the plug. They're understandably uninterested in a technology that costs more than its cabled counterparts and furnishes only a fraction of their throughput. They're not sure if wireless LANs can really meet the needs of their applications. And—despite all the hype about freedom—they're worried about getting locked into proprietary products.
