Building Virtual LANs on a Real-World Budget

Virtual LANs pose one very real problem right now. To build one that delivers vLAN's full potential, net managers need to spend close to $900 per workstation-the current average cost of connecting each PC to its own Ethernet switch port. Since that approach would bust most corporate network budgets, managers usually fall back to the economy plan: using stackable hubs to connect a dozen or more PCs to a single switch port. That pretty much takes the "virtual" out of virtual LANs, since every PC connected to a stackable hub has to belong to the same vLAN group.
