Net managers are accustomed to feeling under the gun (it's an occupational hazard). These days, though, they're probably sweating bullets-thanks to the latest corporate imperative. Call it re-engineering or downsizing, it adds up to the same thing: Develop enterprise-wide client-server applications that boast mainframe-caliber performance and control. It's enough to make even the calmest corporate networker go ballistic. Unlike a workgroup or LAN, an enterprise network consists of different (read incompatible) databases running on everything from OS/2 PCs and Unix workstations to classic big iron.
