When it comes to keeping track of users and network resources, enterprise networks mean enterprise headaches. The problem is that each multiuser system—from NOS to mainframe—has its own method for managing information. What's needed is something that can tie all these disparate mechanisms into a single, unified directory. Unisys Corp. (Blue Bell, Pa.) thinks it has the answer in the form of TransIT 500, the first commercial implementation of the 1993 version of the International Telecommunication Union's X.500 directory services specification.
