Mobile users can't help but feel there's a little magic in the air when they fire up their notebook PCs and make their first contact with the distant wired world. But that sense of wonder lasts only until users realize that today's wireless WAN services can't prop up most distributed corporate applications, including remote LAN access, e-mail, database querying, and older field-service dispatch applications.
