In responding to the RFP, there are several issues that need to be investigated: 1. Integration of SNA, LAN and voice traffic through one access device 2. Choosing a WAN technology 3. The impact of the Internet 4. Migration to ATM WAN 5. Management of the network By integrating various sources of WAN traffic through one access device, it is possible to reduce capital and ownership cost. This is a non-trivial task because different types of traffic have different requirements. For example, packetized voice can tolerate some packet loss, but not delay. SNA traffic has low tolerance for delay and packet loss. LAN traffic, however, can tolerate both delay and packet loss. Therefore, a network access device must be able to accommodate the requirements of each traffic type. Features such as flexible pri-oritization schemes (being able to prioritize by SNA PU), hardware data compression and voice over frame relay are necessary.
