Editor's Notes: From April 15 to April 29, Jiirgen Habermas made arnhistorical visit to China, comparable to those by Bertrand Russell andrnJohn Dewey several decades ago. During his visit, he delivered sevenrnlectures at universities and research institutes in Beijing and Shanghai.rnTheir topics range from human rights, practical rationality, models ofrndemocracy, and globalization. In addition, he also participated at severalrnsymposia with Chinese intellectuals. Recorded below is the one he hadrnat the office of Reading ~]~)) , a very influential book reviewrnmonthly, on April 17, 2001. Following this article, we publish a lengthyrnstudy of the relevance of Haberrnas's philosophy to Chinese discoursernof modernity.
