Multiple modernities, strauss, and contemporary epistemology: Charles Taylor meets Chinese Scholars in Shanghai

The Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor is well known in China mainly as arnmajor participant in the debate between liberalism and communitarianism. Inrnrecent years, his books on Hegel, Sources of the Self, and The Malaise of Moderni(yrnhave been translated into Chinese, together with many of his articles on civilrnsociety, politics of recognition, and multiculturalism. In early December 2003,rnTaylor took his first visit to China. In Beijing he gave a speech on the FrenchrnRevolution and the American Revolution. In Shanghai he was invited tornspeak at an international symposium on "Cities in East Asia Today: NewrnCulture and New Ideology." On December 8 he visited East China NormalrnUniversity and gave a round table discussion with scholars there in the fieldsrnof philosophy, history, literary studies, political science and others.
