Letter: Gregory Bateson to Cecil P. Martin

Dear Dr. Martin, Some time ago I received from the publishers a copy of your book, Psychology, Evolution, and Sex. I wish to thank you very much for this, and to try to put on paper for you some of the thoughts which it provokes. As you probably know, my father, especially in his latter years, came to believe most of the negative points critical of mutation-selection theory which you make in the book. He was especially critical of the selection aspects of the theory and, at least in private talk, expressed the view that in the following up of the Mendelian phenomena he had been led into a cul-de-sac irrelevant for the main problems of evolutionary process.
