Reviewing this book for Current Issues in Tourism seems very appropriate as the authors are sure that the themes are the most important for the future of tourism studies. Macleod and Carrier note that the themes of culture and power are central to a full understanding of tourism development. They suggest that power and culture are central to the study of tourism and moreover they argue that anthropology offers the best way to approach these subjects. Born from a meeting of the Association of Social Anthropologists of the UK and Commonwealth in 2007, these papers are concerned with 'Thinking through Tourism' and focussing on tourism and the political-economic relations within host countries.
