Sources and methods series: considering other record groups in Nara holding cryptologic and cryptologic-related records

The experiences of researchers, historians, and other scholars of cryptologic records have, for a long time, been aware that confines of historic cryptologic material do not lie at the borders of Record groups 457 and 38. Yet, to know what other record groups to peruse, one needs to understand the bureaucratic structures within which the cryptologic organizations reside. Similarly, researchers need to consider record groups of organizations outside the collections of cryptologic records which had relations with cryptologic elements, either as production partners or consumers of communications intelligence.
