This project has the best crane engineers in the world involved, not to mention the support of our operators who relish the thought of not having to be on a perch some 40m above the wharf if it is not really required. Their estimates of potential productivity increases far exceed those of the conservative simulation study previously mentioned. For the sceptics who might question the effective employment of such a crane for ship-to-shore handling, we have a safety valve. The design will allow as a last resort permanently fixing the girder at the top position so that its characteristics mirror those of the other seven Suez Class machines if the goals previously mentioned are not achieved. Our assessment of the project is that it is a much lower risk than that of the dual hoist cranes delivered to VIT in 1987. The first four cranes, the largest in the world, were delivered in September 2003. The elevating trolley girder crane and the remaining cranes are scheduled to be offloaded in Norfolk in February 2005.
