For a number of years, I served as author of the "Emcomm & You" column in WorldRadio magazine. As CQ readers know, WorldRadio has been acquired by CQ and is now available as a free on-line publication at. In my last WorldRadio column I offered the opinion that the days of amateurs providing emergency communications assistance to public-safety agencies is, in many places, drawing to a close. Reader feedback agreed with my perspective. At least a dozen writers, some public-safety professionals/hams like me, underscored my point that the need for amateur radio assistance to public safety was in many jurisdictions diminishing if not disappearing altogether. Their common question was "Where do we go next?"
