Monitoring and improving construction productivity has always been a major concern in the construction industry. Work sampling is one tool that is used to measure worker productivity. The following work sampling productivity study was conducted to improve labor productivity for mechanical construction and general construction work activities at Eli Lilly's Tippecanoe Laboratories bulk-pharmaceutical facility located in Lafayette, Indiana. Study participants were seeking to improve labor productivity, but a benchmark model needed to be established to accomplish this goal. According to results of this study of the Eli Lilly Tippecanoe Laboratories, time was spent in three main categories; primary (productive) time was 29 percent, secondary time was 43 percent, and recoverable time was 28 percent. After review of the findings, the observers recommended three focus areas for improving labor productivity: (1) improving communications, (2) reducing materials handling, and (3) reducing waiting time. This article discusses the study parameters and findings.
