Some months ago, I engaged in an e-mail discussion with an AACE International member who is also active in PMI's College of Scheduling. (Please note that I am a charter member of PMI's College of Scheduling.) The issue being discussed between the two of us was the appropriate role of a scheduler. In conjunction with the discussion concerning the role of the scheduler, I tried to identify what I perceive to be the real value of a good scheduler. Many involved in this international e-mail discussion were asserting the position that the scheduler was the owner of the schedule, was solely in charge of the schedule and the scheduling effort. That discussion was truncated before we had a chance to thoroughly explore the issue. Since the theme of this month's issue of Cost Engineering is scheduling, I though it would be a good time to complete my thoughts on the role and the value of a scheduler.
