Integrating Traditional Commercial Buildings With Intelligent Building Concepts

This article aims to study how traditional commercial buildings in Hong Kong may integrate intelligent building concepts to cope with user requirements, with briefing on the evolution of intelligent buildings (IBs) and methods of assessing building performances. There has been increasing demand on workplace requirements, as in IBs, to fulfill corporate objectives. Most traditional commercial buildings constructed before the 1990s are not built with IB concepts; and are not compatible with current market needs, organizational and users' expectations. The focus of this article explores how these buildings may benefit through potential modifications with contemporary IB concepts to achieve sustainable competitive advantages. A pilot study using quantitative research methodology via questionnaires has been adopted to evaluate the existing building performances and users' satisfaction level.
