If there's a theme to Anita Zenger's career, it is the drive to "optimize," whether it be an opportunity, an effort to get the best deal, finding the best route or ensuring project operations. Anita found her passion for "optimization" thanks to an elective class in Operations Research she took as a senior at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. After graduating, Anita followed in her father's footsteps as a U.S. Naval officer in the Civil Engineer Corps (CEC). During her 5 years of service in the Navy, Anita gained experience in a variety of roles. Her last assignment was as an Assistant Resident Officer in Charge of Construction. In this tie period she also obtained her Professional Engineer license. Following her service in the U.S. Navy, Anita and her young family moved from Charleston, SC, to Livermore, Calif., where she started working for her current employer Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), an applied science national defense laboratory.
