In the last 150 years, factories have gone from totally manual operations with each work station operated by a single worker to fully automated and integrated processes that can sometimes be operated "lights out". Streamlining the factory floor has been in effect since the 18th century. From water power to steam engines and eventually electricity, those first 100 years on the factory floor were labor intensive and at times, very slow and costly.
