Demographic challenges, such as aging expertise and the struggle to hire new engineers, are leading to greater demands for automation and control vendors and original equipment manufacturers. That message rang clearly at the ARC Forum in February, Sandy Vasser, facilities electrical and instrumentation manager for Exxon Mobil Development, said suppliers need to help 1) eliminate, simplify, and automate steps in the overall execution of automation; 2) minimize customer engineering and reduce total engineering; 3)shift custom engineering to software and rely on standard hardware; 4)virtualize hardware and provide software designed against the virtualized system;5)prevent rework;and 6)eliminate unnecessary components.
